The town of Selvarin

Soulbearer

a pixel-art dungeon action RPG

The lanterns are going out.
Someone has to go below.

The wall remembers those who never returned. Wenna’s name is not carved here yet.

The town of Selvarin burns light that was carried up from below, and the light is nearly spent. Wenna, the lamplighter, went down to tend the lower lamps. She has not come back. You are a delver with a blade and the Elder’s coin. Go below. Bring back the light. What you take from the dark, you keep.

The town that keeps a lantern burning

Above the gate, the town of Selvarin goes on: lamplighters on their rounds, a tavern called the Drowned Lantern, a wall of names that only grows on one side. Everyone has something to sell you, and something they would rather not say.

  • Have you seen Wenna? Tall, long hook, talks to lanterns like they owe her money. She went to check the lower lamps.

She said the lower lamps matter more than ours. She never said why.

    Tobin, her apprentice
  • Every name on this wall went down and stayed. The ones who come back get carved on the other side. It’s a smaller side.

What the town says is down there

The Last Watch

They wore our badge, child. The Last Watch.

Elder Arel

The town’s own guard went down long ago. They hold every room of the first floor.

The Pale Chaplain

He buried every one of them with his own hands.

Elder Arel

He keeps no chamber. When enough of the dead fall, a bell rings somewhere below, and he comes looking.

The Bone Colossus

“It remembers only the ones who stayed.”

Something waits at the bottom that nobody in the town will name.

Stratum II 260 m

The body was taken. The soul came back.

Elder Arel

Every creature below carries a power of its own: a strike, a curse, a fire. Beat it, and its spirit can be yours, rising over you to do its work whenever you call it. The game calls these powers Essences. Die, and the dead keep your body and your pack. Your soul walks home with every power it has taken. That is the name: the hero bears the souls they take.

  • Wail Essence icon: a green orb holding a mourning banshee with open arms

    Wail

    from the banshee

Her cry holds everything around you where it stands.

  • Rattle Essence icon: a violet orb with a heap of bones becoming a skeleton soldier

    Rattle

    from the Watch’s soldiers

Fall apart, and nothing can touch you.

  • Flare Essence icon: a pale gold orb holding a lamp moth

    Flare

    from the lamp moth

Light a dark floor and see what was waiting.

Stratum III 420 m

Choose who goes down.

Six heroes, each with their own kit and a power of their own, and a seventh who walked out of the Watch with the badge cut off his coat.

  • Dark Knight
  • Paladin
  • Duelist
  • Ranger-knight
  • Archer
  • Mage
  • Deserter

Every descent opens a different floor. You will not walk the same way down twice.

  • A hero swinging a weapon at a skeleton beside bunk beds in the Hollow Gallery, a stony cave room with green crystals, with the health, stamina and shadow bars at the top left and the ability bar at the bottom.
  • In a mossy stone hall, the spirit of the Kiln Gaoler slams down over the hero with an orange arc, breaking the shields of a group of skeletons.
  • Selvarin from above: a cobbled street between timber houses and a fountain, lanterns strung across the way, and a hero walking up toward the gate.

How far down will you go?

The demo is the first chapter: the town of Selvarin and the floor the Last Watch holds. It is an early build. Expect rough edges, and tell us where you hit them.
